Purpose:

The Marble Mountain Resort is managed by the Marble Mountain Development Corporation (MMDC), located in Steady Brook, in the Humber Valley region of Western Newfoundland.  The mandate of the Marble Mountain Development Corporation is to serve as a catalyst for tourism development in western Newfoundland. As stated in MMDC’s Articles of Incorporation, the mandate of the Board is as follows: 

  • To increase skier visits and the number of visitors
  • To develop and promote Marble Mountain as a year-round, full-service resort
  • Actively pursue operators, tenants and/or owners to occupy the lands in the area for the following purposes:
    • Ski facilities
    • Summer activities and attractions
    • Accommodations and services
    • Any other activity consistent with the development of a four-season establishment

Structure:

The bylaws of the Corporation provide for eleven (11) board members which are appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development.

The 11 member board includes a representative from the Marble Ski and Ride Club, a representative of the City of Corner Brook, and a representative for the Town of Steady Brook. There are also two government representatives including the Deputy Minister or designate, Department Business Tourism Culture and Rural Development (BTCRD); the Deputy Minister or Designate, Department of Finance. Six positions are available to the general public including a Chair and Vice-Chair.

The recommended appointments for the City of Corner Brook, the Town of Steady Brook and the Marble Ski and Ride Club will be submitted for consideration by those respective entities.

MMDC’s current management team consists of five full-time employees who oversee the year-round operation of the resort. In addition, there are over 150 seasonal employees. During the ski season, an Outside Operations Manager, Snow School Manager and Ski Patrol Manager are hired. The summer operations of the resort consist of weddings, meetings and conferences, and Marble Zip Tours (MZT), which is run by a third-party operator.

Competency Profile:

Those who comprise the Marble Mountain Development Corporation Board should collectively possess the following qualifications: 

  • Organizational management and governance
  • Experience in Human Resource management and Labour Relations
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the areas of marketing, promotions, corporate communications, social media, media relations, and crises management
  • Tourism industry knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of winter tourism and the ski industry
  • Experience in ski hill operations, resort operations: accommodation, food service
  • Knowledge of Land use planning and development
  • Knowledge of business development and development
  • Financial Expertise /Literacy
  • Legal Expertise

Qualifications:

Board members should possess knowledge of and experience in operation of a tourism resort, food service, accommodation or other relevant experience through either on a professional or volunteer basis. Personal attributes required of board members should include: 

    • high ethical standards and integrity
    • appreciation of responsibilities to the public
    • flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions;
    • capable of a broad perspective on issues;
    • ability to listen and work as a team member;
    • no direct or indirect conflict of interest

 

Time Commitments:

Members of the Marble Mountain Development Corporation Board should be available to meet approximately ten times per year. Occasionally decisions of the board will be requested via email or conference call. Board members may also be expected to spend additional time to review materials and prepare for Board and Committee meetings.

Term:

Board terms are for a period of three (3) years and board members continue to hold office until he or she is reappointed or a new member is appointed.

Vacancy Profile:

The MMDC is seeking to fill the Chair, Vice Chair and three at large positions through expressions of interest from individuals who possess the background, experience and skill-set identified in the board profile.
